Every so often a hurricane causes so much damage and destruction, the national Weather Service "retires" a name, or takes it out of circulation. This is to prevent confusion of different storms having the same name (they follow a list, see this page for more details). The following list is of such infamous storms, and the years in which they hit. Why are there so many more hurricanes with women's names? This is because the Australian Bureau of Meteorlogy didn't start giving cyclones men's names until 1976. the National Weather Service in the USA didn't start until 1979.  We have US retired Tropical Cyclones and below, are Australian Retired Cyclone Names.
