The Puritans of the 16th and 17th centuries used many virtue names which have fallen out of use (although I think I'm going to name my first child Job-raked-out-of-the-ashes-- it just has that certain something!). Many names such as Joy, Hope and Faith are still used today, and the idea of using virtues as names remains as people coin modern words for names (i.e., Serenity, Chastity [surprisingly wasn't used by the Puritans], Heavenly etc.) Here is a list of actual names culled from records of yore.
